How to properly care and maintain your cutting board to last a lifetime

Your cutting board is more than just a kitchen tool; it’s an essential part of your kitchen that makes cooking easier and more enjoyable. With a little care, your wooden boards can stay beautiful and functional for years to come.

Here's everything you need to know to keep your wooden boards in great shape.

General Use and Care Tips

  • Clean with warm water and mild soap After each use, clean your cutting board with warm water and a mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers that could damage the wood surface.
  • Always wash by hand - please remember that wooden products are NOT dishwasher safe.
  • Dry immediately Once cleaned, wipe your board dry with a soft towel. Letting water sit on the board’s surface can lead to warping or cracking. Never soak or submerge your board in water for long periods, as this weakens the wood fibers.
  • Refinish when necessary If your board looks dry or its color has faded, you can restore its shine and protect it with food-safe cutting board oil or wax. For best results, we recommend re-applying the food-safe oil or wax once a 3-4 weeks.
  • Enjoy your board Don’t worry about using your board every day! Wooden boards are designed to handle cutting, chopping, and serving. With care, their charm only grows over time.

Refinishing Directions

Refreshing your cutting board is simple and only takes five easy steps:

  1. Clean the board with warm water and mild soap, then dry it thoroughly.
  2. Use a soft cloth or paper towel to apply a generous amount of food-safe oil or wax, such as mineral oil or beeswax-based products.
  3. Let the treatment soak into the wood for a couple of hours, or even overnight.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 if your board looks particularly dry.
  5. Wipe off any excess oil or wax with a clean, soft cloth or paper towel, and your board is ready to use again.

This is our recipe to bring back the shine, make the color pop, and protect your board from drying out or cracking.

There are many food-safe oil or wax based options available on the market, or check out the butcher block butter: nourish and preserve, made from just two natural ingredients - beeswax and mineral oil.

With these easy tips, your cutting boards and charcuterie boards will stay in excellent shape for years. They’ll continue to be reliable tools in the kitchen and stylish additions to your dining table.
